1 ROYAL APARTMENTS
Don't expect a sumptuous royal residence - it's more like a comfortable country house,
with simple furnishings and old-fashioned charm. Even the Queen's and Duke's private
apartments are not at all elaborate, with basic, 3ft-wide single beds! The only double
bed is in the honeymoon suite, where Bill and Hillary Clinton slept during a state visit.
2 STATE ROOMS
The State Rooms are slightly grander, but still understated. The
Drawing Room
has
chintz chair covers and a grand piano (firmly bolted to the floor); Noël Coward once
tickled its keys while entertaining the royal family. The
Dining Room
is adorned with
treasures gifted to the Queen during her travels. Check out the place settings: it took
over three hours to lay the table for a state banquet - the space between each piece of
cutlery was meticulously measured with a ruler!
3 CREW QUARTERS
You'll get a shock when you see the cramped conditions below deck where the non-
commissioned sailors, and even some of the officers, slept in narrow bunk beds three
tiers high. There was no peace or privacy; the only officer who had en suite facilities
was the admiral.
