testing matrix. In contrast, the Chinese respondents favored mostly the uppermost
row.
18) On a screen, where would you place new information?
Chinese
Hypotheses.
New information is most readily noticeable in the top-left corner of the
screen.
New information (key, unknown) is expected on the left.
Users tend to read from top left towards the center of the screen.
Results summary.
The largest group of the respondents would place new information in the middle
center of the screen (35%). According to them, it is the place attracting their atten-
tion the most, and would look there first. Top-center placement was cited as second
(25%), mostly because of users' reading habits, but also because they expect new in-
formation above the important information. The third largest group is top right (20%),
and the main reasons are reading habits and habits from favorite applications. (See
Figure 8.11.)
Czech
Results summary.
The largest group of respondents (40%) chose top right as the place for new informa-
tion, mainly because of their habit from Facebook or Windows notifications. Also,
such a placement does not interfere with the content of the window. Top-left placement
gained 20%, because it is easily noticeable given the top-to-bottom reading direction.
Top-center placement gained also 20%, the reasons being reading direction, but also
habit from webmail and Facebook. (See Figure 8.12.)
