You'll notice that the raw (out-of-camera) file is underexposed ( Figure 10.1 ) . This is
something I do when photographing landscapes because I prefer to use the available dy-
namic range rather than shooting for HDR or using a neutral density filter. I generally un-
derexpose landscape images by two to three stops.

1. Open the spillers_before.dng raw file from within Photoshop.
2. First we'll make use of the dynamic range and bring out detail from the darker
areas of the picture.
3. In Camera Raw, under the Basic tab, move the Shadows slider all the way to the
right (+100). And because we want more detail visible, also move the Blacks slider
all the way to the right (+100) ( Figure 10.2 ) .
