University of North Carolina Long-Term Parking Areas (2003-2004)
As part of a campus expansion plan, the University of North Carolina reduced
traffic on campus by building large remote parking areas on the outskirts of
Chapel Hill. The issue of stormwater management and environmental impacts
from construction of large impervious surfaces was critical to both the university
and local government. Cahill Associates designed two large parking lots on the
north and south sides of town, with both new porous pavement systems and
rehabilitated existing impervious pavements, Porous AC and PCC pavements
were used to compare material side by side, and all included a stone storage and
infiltration bed that infiltrates the soil mantle and recharges the aquifer system,
eliminating both increased runoff volume and NPS pollutants (Figure B-40).
The then-existing Estes lot adjacent to the resurfaced impervious lot was
expanded by 600 spaces using porous AC for both the parking bays and aisles.
Runoff from the remaining impervious surfaces was mitigated by increasing the
runoff capture volume from the new beds so that runoff drains through the new
pervious AC. At the Friday Center lot on the south side, an additional 1,200
