Acropolis Museum
The landmark Acropolis Museum ( Click here ) contains the precious sculptures from the
Acropolis, preserved in spacious, well-lit glory. These include the caryatids and amazing
works from the Parthenon's pediments, metopes and frieze.
Ancient Theatres
On the way up the southern slope of the Acropolis, explore the Theatre of Dionysos (
Click here ) - the birthplace of theatre - and the magnificent Odeon of Herodes Atticus (
Click here ) , built in AD 161 and still in use today.
Acropolis
The Acropolis ( Click here ) is the most important ancient site in the Western world. Take
in its diminutive, restored Temple of Athena Nike, then enter through the grand gates of
the Propylaia to visit the iconic Parthenon as well as the Erechtheion, with its statuesque
Porch of the Caryatids. On a clear day you can see for miles from the sweeping hilltop.
Ancient Agora
Exit the Acropolis from the north gate and visit ancient Athens' civic centre: the Ancient
Agora ( Click here ) . The seat of democracy, philosophy and commerce, this rambling
site, with the superb Temple of Hephaestus, also has a top-notch museum in the Stoa of
Attalos.
Roman Agora
The highlight of the Roman Agora ( Click here ) is the well-preserved Tower of the
Winds. Built in the 1st century BC, it functioned as an ingenious sundial, weather vane,
water clock and compass. Each side represents a point of the compass, and has a relief of
a figure depicting the wind associated with that point.
