This once-abandoned 1909 church
has been a gathering place for performers and audiences since being officially desig-
nated as a cultural space in 1973. Following a comprehensive recent renovation, the be-
loved Cultch (as everyone calls it) is now one of Vancouver's entertainment jewels with
a busy roster of local, fringe and visiting theatrical shows from spoken word to touring
Chekov productions.
Check the online calendar to see what's on stage during your visit. And, after the
show, hang around in the lobby wine bar to meet the locals and check out the exhibition
in the on-site art gallery - it changes every three weeks. While you're here, ask the staff
about the nearby
York Theatre
, a renovated studio performance space the Cultch plans
to open soon.

1980s movie house with very comfy seats, the Rio is like a community rep theater sta-
ging everything from blockbuster and art-house movies to live music (there's an excel-
lent sound system), spoken word and saucy burlesque nights. Check the calendar to see

) are always popular.
