In-Depth Information
hasn't changed for decades and that's its main charm. Expect good coffee plus some
handy pizzas slices: that other Italian food group.
A great spot to imagine yourself in a backstreet, no-nonsense coffee bar in Italy.
You'll likely hear plenty of chatter of the soccer-related variety and if you drink enough
espresso here, you might even begin to understand it.
WORTH A DETOUR
EASTSIDE MICROBREWERY CRAWL
If you're a true beer nut, consider checking out a round of little, off-the-beaten-
path East Vancouver microbreweries that even some locals don't know about.
Stay on the Drive and continue walking north for about 10 minutes past the inter-
section with Venables St and into an old industrial part of town (it's perfectly
safe). You'll come to Storm Brewing ( 604-255-9119; www.stormbrewing.org ; 310 Commer-
cial Dr; 20) , a local legend beermaker that's been crafting great ales since 1995.
Call ahead for an impromptu tour (Wednesday is brewing day, so that's the best
time to come). With any luck, you'll be able to sample their excellent Black Plague
Stout. Continue north for two blocks and turn right onto Powell St. A few minutes
along, you'll find the lovely Powell Street Craft Brewery ( www.powellbeer.com ; 1830 Powell
St; 1-7pm Wed-Sat; 4) . This art-lined, gable-roofed nanobrewery is one of the
city's smallest beer producers. Consider a sample of the lip-smacking Dive Bomb
Porter, and pick-up a takeout growler to go. Despite its diminutive stature, this
producer stunned beer fans across the country in 2013 when its Old Jalopy Pale
Ale was named the nation's Beer of the Year at the annual Canadian Brewing
Awards. Continue east on Powell, turn right onto Victoria Dr and then left on Tri-
umph St. Within a couple of minutes, you'll hit the storefront of Parallel 49 Brewing
Company ( www.parallel49brewing.com ; 1950 Triumph St; noon-9pm; 14) . Nip into the
tasting room here and sample the array of quirky tipples, including Hoparazzi In-
dia Pale Lager and Gypsy Tears Ruby Red Ale.
