The Tri-Valley Trail is an easy-to-follow loop that begins and ends on Hopkins Road
in White Clay Creek State Park near the park's nature center. The portion of the
trail on the east side of White Clay Creek follows the path of the Pomeroy and
Newark Railroad, which is why this trail is sometimes referred to as the Pomeroy
Rail-Trail. The Pomeroy Railroad operated from 1873 to 1929, connecting Pomeroy,
Pennsylvania, with Newark, Delaware, and Delaware City. The railroad was often re-
ferred to by locals as the “Pumpsie Doodle.”
From the nature center parking lot, walk to Hopkins Road and cross it to find
the beginning of the trail. After a mile, the trail turns left, passes the parking lot near
Wedgewood Road, and then crosses a bridge over White Clay Creek. Most of this
trail has a natural surface, but the trail developers put crushed stone down for a very
short portion of the trail after the bridge. Follow the route of the crushed stone, as it
is there to indicate the direction of this rail-trail. The old railroad was located on the
side of the creek; look for a sign shortly after the bridge on your right that provides
information on the railroad's history.
