OTHER FRUIT CROPS
Many of the fruit crops included in this section originated
in the tropics and subtropics and were introduced into
Australia early in the nineteenth century. Production is
limited but several crops have good potential for future
expansion. The crops are grown in various locations
throughout the tropical and subtropical areas of Australia.
BREADFRUIT
( Artocarpus spp. )
ANTHRACNOSE
Cause
The fungus Colletotrichum acutatum (refer to the chapter
on Common diseases of perennial fruit crops).

STEM-END ROT
Cause
The fungi Botryosphaeria spp.
CARAMBOLA
( Averrhoa carambola )
Symptoms
Tan lesions appear at the stem end of the fruit after harvest
and spread rapidly through the fruit. In the advanced
stages of infection, white grey fungal growth may appear
on the surface of lesions.
ANTHRACNOSE
Cause
The fungi Colletotrichum acutatum and C. gloeosporioide s
(refer to the chapter on Common diseases of perennial
fruit crops).
Latent infections may be present in the skin or stem
end of fruit before harvest. Lesions usually develop
during fruit ripening. Water stress may favour fruit
infection.
