ANTHRACNOSE
■
Cause
The fungus
Colletotrichum gloeosporioides
(refer to the
chapter on Common diseases of perennial fruit crops).
Importance
Anthracnose is an occasional disease of cacao
in Queensland and appears to be associated with damage
to the pods.
Fig 19.4 Anthracnose lesions on carambola fruit.
Source of infection and spread
Occasional losses occur in harvested fruit. Little is known
about the infection process of
Botryosphaeria
spp. The
fungus has been isolated from healthy tissue in Australia.
PHYTOPHTHORA DISEASES (ROOT
ROT, TIP BLIGHT, POD ROT, COLLAR ROT)
Cause
The oomycete
Phytophthora
spp. (refer to the chapter on
Common diseases of perennial fruit crops).
Importance
Species of
Phytophthora
have not been found on cacao in
Australia but cause serious losses in other production areas.
PINK DISEASE
■
Cause
The fungus
Erythricium salmonicolor
.
