Eating
Makung is a seafood-lover's paradise, though locally caught seafood is expensive (much
of what you'll find at restaurants is flown in from other parts of Taiwan). Raw lóng xiā
(lobster) and fried wǔ xiāng cìhétún ('five-flavour' balloonfish) are favourites. In addi-
tion, look for the following local specialities: jīnguā mǐfěn (pumpkin rice noodles), xián
bǐng (salty biscuits), shāo ròu fàn (grilled meat with rice) and hēi táng gāo (brown-sugar
sponge cakes). Penghu is famous for the latter.
There are restaurants all over town and you'll find street food cooking in front of just
about any temple. Jhongjheng and Guangfu Rds are particularly rich in places to eat or
just nibble.

this handsome colonial building was once the home of Penghu's first county chief. It's
now a restaurant serving standard Taiwanese fare in a chic tea lounge and tatami dining
rooms.

best Taiwanese niúròu tāngmiàn (beef noodle soup) we've ever eaten. Quite the paradox,
eh? To get to the restaurant head up Guangfu Rd and then turn left on Sanduo Rd.

seafood restaurants cater to large groups, this new, small eatery has a thoughtful menu
for solo or independent travellers who want to sample fish and other sea creatures freshly
