Sleeping
During summer, hotel prices in Makung rise dramatically, and rooms are hard to come by
on weekends and holidays. But with hundreds of B&Bs around the archipelago, there's
likely to be something available at any time.
Autumn through spring is low season, and though it's windier than in summer, the
weather is usually still hot in autumn and spring; sizeable discounts are available at even
the most expensive hotels.

Located on the eastern outskirts of
Makung, this HI-affiliated hostel has one well-maintained double and 19 comfy bunks
distributed in three-bed and four-bed dorms. The host, Jeffrey, is super-hospitable and
speaks good English. Other perks include free laundry service and bike rentals. It's a
five-minute scooter ride from downtown Makung. Detailed directions are available on

The bland exterior of this hotel gives no hint of the modern and well-appointed
rooms within, and most rooms come with a harbour view. The staff are helpful and at-
tentive, and the restaurant serves a decent Western breakfast and afternoon tea. The hotel
is just a stone's throw from most places of interest in Makung.

This homestay offers simple modern comforts and friendly hosts. And the loca-
tion, of course. If you don't mind a bit of noise, get a room with a balcony over the old
street. To get to the homestay head down the alley beside Matsu Temple. The entrance to
the B&B is just past the Shihkung Ancestral Shrine.
