side the Hotel Tainan has one of the best buffets in town.
Anping
The area close to Fort Anping is also well known for its local foods. Some snacks to look
out for include shrimp rolls ( xiājuǎn ) and fish-ball soup ( yúwántāng ).
An-Ping Gui Ji Local Cuisine Cultural Restaurant TAIWANESE $
(Ānpíng Guìjì Měishí Wénhuàguǎn; 93 Yenping Jie; set meals NT$149; 11am-8pm) This restaur-
ant offers a host of traditional Tainan snacks at low prices. The shop features a big photo
display of traditional foods and a multilanguage brochure to help visitors. The restaurant
also sells Chou family shrimp rolls (Zhōushì Xiājuǎn), an Anping staple.
Anping Bean Jelly TAIWANESE, DESSERT $
(Tóngjì ānpíng Dòuhuā; 433 Anbei Rd; desserts from NT$35; 9am-11pm) There are only a
dozen items on the menu in this celebrated eatery, and its claim to fame is the bean jelly
(bean curd; dòuhuā ) with tapioca or red beans. Only organic soybeans are used and all
items are MSG-free. There are a few branches in town but this flagship is the locals' all-
time favourite.
Drinking & Nightlife
There are cafes and teahouses all around Tainan. Check out the back alleys if you're
looking for something with old Tainan character.

(Shíbāmǎo Cháwū; 30 Mincyuan 2nd Rd; tea from NT$120; 10am-8pm) Tucked away in the
garden of the historic Tainan Public Hall (Gōnghuì Táng), this elegant teahouse-cum-art-
space occupies a fine replica of a 1930s Japanese-style wooden structure. Settle in and
taste the wide tea selection - black, white, green, oolong, fruit and herbal brews - or buy
beautiful pots and boxes of healing leaves.
