Because of its location (right across from Shida University), this is usually the first ve-
getarian buffet many newly arrived students visit. The owners haven't let success go to
their heads, though, and they still serve the same sublime vegetarian cuisine as always.

This popular nook for Western pies and cakes (also coffee, milk-
shakes and light meals) is on a quiet alley across from Grandma Nitti's (which runs
Sweetie Pie), a long-running Western breakfast and lunch venue.

This is Taipei's top spot for Taiwanese food. Though James Kitchen
has a warm down-home setting, the presentation and freshness of each dish is anything
but commonplace. Try the oysters with bread sticks, the bamboo shoots, the bean curd
mushroom rolls, or pretty much anything that catches your eye. It's best to make a reser-
vation.
There is a second eating area at 42-5 Yongkang St (just around the corner) if you find
the main restaurant closed.
Yongkang Beef Noodles

Opened since 1963, this is one of Taipei's top spots for
beef noodles, especially of the
hóngshāo
(red spicy broth) variety. Beef portions are gen-
erous and melt in your mouth. Other worthwhile dishes include steamed ribs. Expect-line
ups at lunch and dinner.
