Horseback Riding & Pack Trips
If you're eager to break in your Wranglers on a saddle, consider the wide range of options
available, starting from two-hour rides to multiday cattle drives, and rustic operations
where guests sweep the stables to ritzy guest ranches with hot tubs and umbrella drinks.
Horseback riding satisfies a primal romantic notion: you can mosey along through
beautiful countryside, crossing rivers and ascending steep slopes that would have cost
dearly on foot. Overnights have an added element of adventure; essentially you are back-
packing but without carrying a load. Depending on your experience and comfort level,
you may be allowed to help care for your animal.
In Yellowstone Park there are corrals at Mammoth, Roosevelt and Canyon Junction.
Grand Teton has rides from Jackson Lake Lodge and Colter Bay ( Click here ) . Ranches in
the Wapiti ( Click here ) and Gallatin ( Click here ) Valleys operate horseback rides for
nonguests.
Check out the Dude Ranchers' Association ( www.duderanch.org ) for helpful informa-

Rafting
Cold water, adrenaline and stunning scenery make rafting a prime summer draw. It's a
great group activity; teens in particular will be ever grateful for trading in the minivan for
a splashier ride. Commercial outfitters in Grand Teton and outside the parks offer options
ranging from inexpensive half-day trips to overnight and multiday expeditions.
Paddlers can choose from large rafts for 12 or more people, or smaller rafts for six; pick
the latter if you prefer paddling, otherwise your full-time job is 'holding on.' Full-day
