In-Depth Information
trips run from $50 to $90 depending on location, and overnight trips can cost $100 to
$200 per person.
White-water trips are not without risk. It's not unusual for participants to fall out of the
raft in rough water, although serious injuries are rare and the vast majority of trips are
without incident. All trip participants are required to wear US Coast Guard-approved life
jackets, and even nonswimmers are welcome. All guides are trained in lifesaving tech-
niques.
River classifications vary over the course of the year, depending on the water level.
Higher water levels, usually associated with spring runoff, make a river trip more challen-
ging.

Canoeing & Kayaking
Exploring the wilderness on water shows the breadth of beauty and solitude beyond the
roads. Yellowstone offers exciting opportunities for paddlers: families can take a load off
little legs and cool off, while romantics can paddle up to hidden camps on remote beaches.
One stunning destination is the pine-rimmed Shoshone Lake ( Click here ) , the largest
backcountry lake in the lower 48. It's popular with boaters who arrive via the Lewis River
Channel and also visit the remote Shoshone Geyser Basin. The vast Yellowstone Lake of-
fers access to the remotest reaches of the park, where you can hike into the rarely visited
southeast corner. Inquire at Bridge Bay Marina on Yellowstone Lake about boat charters
or potential shuttles to the southeast corner.
Grand Teton's Jackson Lake offers scenic backcountry paddling ( Click here ) , with
several islands to explore and hiking in the little- visited northwest corner. Novice and
family paddlers favor String and Leigh Lakes ( Click here ) , and Lewis Lake in Yellow-
stone. Wildlife watching is superlative on Two Ocean Lake.
