Machining a slot
The way I usually cut a through-slot is to put an undersized drill through both
ends of the slot and then put a size slot drill through at each end. I then mill
away the centre of the slot with an undersized slot drill and finally finish both
sides of the slot with an undersized slot drill or end mill. This ensures a size
slot with correctly rounded ends and no key-holing effect. You can cut slots to
depth using the same method, but after machining them run a size cutter all
along the slot to ensure the bottom has been cleaned up flat.
