when machining longer components.
Soft vice jaws
Soft jaws for the vice can be made from steel or aluminium. You can use soft
vice jaws in several ways. The obvious way is to skim the inside of the jaws
once they are in the vice. Just a light cleaning-up cut is all that is required.

bar will enable the moving jaw to roll up the same as it will do if the bar is not
there. You could also mill all the way along the soft jaws creating a channel to
hold the work in.
Finally, you could machine a nest in the vice jaws to take a component. A
circular nest made with a slot drill or similar cutter will allow you to clamp a
circular component in the vice; you could machine asquare for square orrect-
angular components; and likewise you could machine a nest of any shape to
suit any shape of component.
