Slitting saws
Slitting saws are for cutting slots or for cutting items into two. Slitting saws are
available in various widths, diameters and tooth pitches. Be careful when us-
ing a slitting saw as the material being cut may close in on the saw and trap it
as you take the cut deeper. You could always add a piece of round bar inside
the hole being slit to stop the work closing up onto the bar. Do make sure you
restrain the round bar in some way so that it cannot move while the slot is
being cut.
There are small slitting saws available which are ideal for cutting the slots
into screws for projects such as clock making. The normal slitting saw is hol-
low ground and has no set on the teeth so it can only cut on its diameter.
