June 1994 on Sweeteners Intended for Use in Foodstuffs

Thisdirectiveisspeciic,arisingfromtheframeworkDirective89/107/EEConfoodadditives.It
appliestofoodadditivesusedtoimpartasweettastetofoodstuffs,togetherwiththoseforaparticu-
larnutritionaluseorforuseastabletopsweeteners.Itdoesnotapplytofoodstuffswithsweetening
properties,suchashoney(Table10.1).
Sweetenersareusedtoreplacesugarintheproductionofenergy-reducedfoodstuffs,noncario-
genic foodstuffs, or food without added sugars for the extension of shelf life, as well as for the
preparationofdieteticproducts.
Different sweeteners that may be placed on the market, as well as their conditions for use in
foodstuffs,arespeciiedintheannexofDirective94/35.Thedosesspeciiedrefertoready-to-eat
(RTE)foodstuffsonly.
Sweeteners cannot be used in foods for infants and young children mentioned in Directive
89/398/EEC(EuropeanCommission1989),includingfoodsforinfantsandyoungchildrenwhoare
notingoodhealth,exceptifprovidedotherwise.
Memberstatesarerequiredtoestablishasystemofregularsurveystomonitorsweetenercon-
sumption.Onthebasisofthisinformation,conditionsoftheuseofsweetenersaslaiddowninthis
directivemay,ifnecessary,beamended.
Labelingoftablesweetenerscontainingpolyolsand/orASPmustbearthefollowingwarnings:

• Polyols—“Overconsumptionmayhavelaxativeeffects”

• ASP—“Containsasourceofphenylalanine”

• ASP-ACSsalt—“Containsasourceofphenylalanine”
