Directive95/2/EC.Inaddition,itisnecessarytowithdrawtheuseofp-hydroxybenzoatesinliquid
dietaryfoodsupplements.
CommissionDecision2004/374/ECsuspendedtheplacingonthemarketingandimportofjelly
minicupscontaininggel-formingfoodadditivesderivedfromseaweedandcertaingumsbecauseof
theriskofchokingontheseproducts.Followingareviewofthatdecision,itisnecessarytoexclude
theuseofcertaingel-formingfoodadditivesinjellyminicups.
TheScientiicCommitteeonFood(SCF)assessedinformationonthesafetyofsoybeanhemi-
celluloseandexpresseditsopinionon4April2003.Thecommitteeconcludedthattheuseofsoy-
beanhemicelluloseisacceptableincertainfoodswithrespecttowhichtherequestwasmadeandat
certaininclusionlevels.Itisthereforeappropriatetopermitsuchuseforcertainpurposes.Inorder
tofacilitatemattersforallergysufferers,however,suchuseshouldnotbepermittedforunprocessed
foodsinwhichsoybeanisnotexpectedtobefound.Inanyevent,consumersshouldbeinformed
whenproductscontainhemicellulosederivedfromsoybeaninaccordancewiththeprovisionsof
Directive2000/13/ECoftheEuropeanParliamentandoftheCouncilof20March2000,onthe
approximationofthelawsoftheMemberStatesrelatingtothelabeling,presentation,andadvertis-
ingoffoodstuffs[amendedbyDirective2003/89,EuropeanCommission(2003)].
TheEFSAassessedinformationonthesafetyofpullulanandexpresseditsopinionon13July
2004.TheEFSAfoundtheuseofpullulanacceptableinthecoatingoffoodsupplementsthatarein
theformofcapsulesandtablets,aswellasinbreathfreshenersintheformofilms.Itistherefore
appropriatetopermittheseuses.
TheEFSAassessedinformationonthesafetyoftertiarybutylhydroquinoneandexpressedits
opinionon12July2004.TheEFSAestablishedanADIof0-0.7mg/kgbodyweightforthisanti-
oxidantandfoundthatitsusewouldbeacceptableincertainfoodstuffsatcertaininclusionlevels.
Itisthereforeappropriatetopermitthisadditive.
TheSCFassessedinformationonthesafetyofstarchaluminumoctenylsuccinateandexpressed
its opinion on 21 March 1997. The committee found the use of this additive as a component of
microencapsulatedvitaminsandcarotenoidsmayberegardedasacceptable.Itisthereforeappro-
priatetopermitthisuse.
During the manufacture of sour-milk cheese, E500ii sodium hydrogen carbonate is added to
pasteurizedmilkinordertobuffertheaciditycausedbythelacticacidtoanappropriatepHvalue,
therebycreatingthenecessarygrowthconditionsfortheripeningcultures.Itisthereforeappropri-
atetopermittheuseofsodiumhydrogencarbonateinsour-milkcheese.
Currently,theuseofamixtureofsorbates(E200,E202,andE203)andbenzoates(E210-E213)
isauthorizedincookedshrimpforpreservation.Itisappropriatetoextendthatauthorizationtoits
useinallcookedcrustaceansandmollusks.
E551silicondioxideispermittedasacarrierforfoodcolorsatamaximumlevelof5%.The
useofsilicondioxideasacarrierforfoodcolorsE171titaniumdioxideandE172ironoxidesand
hydroxidesshouldalsobepermittedatamaximumlevelof90%relativetothepigment.
Directive 95/2/EC limits the use of additives listed in Annex I to that directive in the tradi-
tionalFrenchbread pain courant francais .Thesamelimitationshouldapplytoasimilartraditional
Hungarianbread.Itisalsoappropriatetoauthorizetheuseofascorbicacid(E300),sodiumascor-
bate(E301),andcalciumdisodiumEDTA(E385)inHungarianliverpatties.
It is necessary to update the current provisions regarding the use of sulites (E220-E228) in
cookedcrustaceans,tablegrapes,andlychees.
In accordance with a request from a member state and the opinion of the SCF expressed on
5 March2003,4-hexylresorcinol,whichwasauthorizedatthenationallevelunderDirective89/107/
EEC,shouldbeauthorizedatthecommunitylevel.
