Someothersubstancesarepermittedinfoodsbutareunsuitableforindividualswithdisordersin
fructosemetabolism.Tagatoseandsorbitolaresugarsubstitutesthatareapprovedforuseincertain
foodsinthe Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code .Thesesubstancesshouldalsobeavoided
bypeoplewithdisordersinfructosemetabolism.Bothtagatoseandsorbitolcanbereadilyidentiied
intheingredientslistbytheuseoftheircommonnames,“tagatose”or“sorbitol.”
It is recommended that people with disorders in fructose metabolism avoid foods containing
fructoseorsucrose(whethernaturallypresentoradded;Sanders2009.
The FDA has ruled that the synthetic sweetener isomaltulose does not promote tooth decay,
therebygivingthegreenlighttomanufacturersmakingcertainclaimsonproductsthatcontainit.
TheFDAconcludedthatisomaltulose,marketedbytheGermancompanyPalatintasPalatinose,is
noncariogenic,meaningthatitdoesnotleadtotoothdecay.Becauseofthestrongmolecularbonds
holdingthesweetener'smoleculestogether,itcannotbreakdownintoitscomponentsugars(includ-
ingglucose)inthemouthbutonlyinthemorevigorousdigestionprocessesthatoccurlater(suchas
inthestomach).Thismeansitdoesnotprovideanyfoodsourceforplaquebacteriainthemouth.
Aftereatingsugar,plaquebacteriaexcretecertainacidsaswasteproducts,andtheseacids,inturn,
degradetoothenamelandleadtocavities.AccordingtoPalatint,isomaltuloseisalsoalow-glycemic
sweetener,meaningitcausesaslow,sustainedincreaseinblood-sugarlevelsratherthanthespike
causedbymanysugars(VanCanetal.2009,2011).Thecompanydevelopedthesweetenerprimar-
ilyforpeoplewithdiabetesorconsumersconcernedaboutpreventingdiabetes.Thecompanytouts
manyotherpropertiesofitsartiicialsweetener.Isomaltuloseisnonhygroscopic,meaningitdoes
notgatherintolumpsanddissolveseasilyintobeverages.AccordingtoPalatint, thismakesitideal
foruseinpowdereddrinks.Inadditiontoresistingbreakdownbyhumansaliva,isomaltulosealso
resists fermentation and digestion by the microbes in dairy products, including lactobacilli. This
meansitcanbeusedindairybeverageswithouttheneedforpreservatives.Unlikesomeotherartii-
cialsweeteners,isomaltuloseisactuallyacarbohydrate,meaningitdoeseventuallybreakdowninto
sugarsinthebodyandprovidesanactualnutritionalbeneit.TheFDArulingissigniicant,because
itallowstheuseofclaimssuchas“doesnotpromotetoothdecay”or“mayreducetheriskofdental
caries”onproductscontainingisomaltulose.Thiswillmakethesweetenermoreattractivetofood
manufacturersandconsumersGutierrez2008).
