Border Crossings
The three major border crossings into Atlantic Canada are between Maine, USA, and
New Brunswick at Calais/St Stephen, Madawaska/Edmundston and Houlton/Woodstock.
The website for the Canadian Border Services Agency ( www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/bwt-taf/
menu-eng.html ) has details on estimated wait times. In general, waits rarely exceed 30
minutes, except during the peak summer season and holidays.
When returning to the USA, check the website for the US Department for Homeland
Security ( http://apps.cbp.gov/bwt ) for border wait times.
Bus
Maritime Bus ( 902-429-2029; www.maritimebus.com ) plies the roads from Saint
John, New Brunswick, as far as Riviere-du-Loup in Quebec, up through Charlottetown,
Price Edward Island (PEI) and to Nova Scotia as far as Halifax and up to Cape Breton Is-
land to North Sydney (for ferry connections to Newfoundland). From Riviere-du-Loup, you
can connect onto the Orleans Express ( www.orleansexpress.com ) to head farther afield
into Quebec. The changeover is pretty seamless.
At the time of writing there was no public bus to get to destinations south of Saint John
or to Maine in the US. You're best bet until someone fills this niche is with a shuttle bus
company like Eastlink ( www.eastlinkshuttle.com ) , which offers door to door service from
Calais in Maine to many destinations throughout New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia.
From Calais in Maine you can take Greyhound buses to other destinations in the US.
