CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO2, the main
cause of human-induced climate change. Modern travel is dependent on aero-
planes, which might use less fuel per kilometre per person than most cars but
travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (including
CO2) and particles also contributes to their climate change impact. Many websites
offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate the carbon emissions gen-
erated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to off set the impact of the
greenhouse gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of climate-friendly initi-
atives throughout the world. Lonely Planet off sets the carbon footprint of all staff
and author travel.
Airlines
The region is not particularly well serviced, and flight and airline choices are limited. Many
visitors will need to fly into Montréal, Toronto, or a US hub city such as New York, and
then connect with another flight to reach their destination in Atlantic Canada. Most flights
are via the national flagship carrier Air Canada (AC; 888-247-2262;
www.aircanada.com ) ; it's one of the world's safest airlines, though locals often gripe
about its stiff prices. Subsidiary Air Canada Jazz operates the majority of flights to and
within the Atlantic region.
Other companies that are based in Canada and are serving international destinations
are the charter airline Air Transat and discount airline WestJet. There are numerous US
airlines that also serve Atlantic Canada, which are worth researching.
