Louisiana State Museum MUSEUM
( http://lsm.crt.state.la.us ; per bldg adult/child $6/free; 10am-4:30pm Tue-Sun) This institu-
tion operates several buildings across the state. The standouts here include the 1911 Cab-
ildo MAP GOOGLE MAP (701 Chartres St) , on the left of the cathedral, a Louisiana his-
tory museum located in the old city hall where Plessy vs Ferguson (which legalized se-
gregation) was argued. The huge number of exhibits inside can easily eat up half a day
(don't miss the 1875 Upright Piano on the 3rd floor), the remainder of which can be
spent in the Cabildo's sister building, on the right of the church, the 1813 Presbytère

with displays of costumes, parade floats and royal jewelry; and a poignant Katrina &
Beyond exhibit, chronicling the before and after of this devastating storm - a surefire
don't-miss for understanding the effects of this disaster on the city.

(1112 Chartres St; adult/child $5/3; tours 10am-4pm Mon-Sat) In 1727, 12 Ursuline nuns ar-
rived in New Orleans to care for the French garrison's 'miserable little hospital' and to
educate the young girls of the colony. Between 1745 and 1752 the French colonial army
built what is now the oldest structure in the Mississippi River Valley and the only re-
