lectic artists. Ask locals for weekend recommendations and you may be rewarded
with a fire-eating display or impromptu collective installations at a secret, hidden
art space.

Claiborne Aves; last Sat of month) Featuring hundreds of the area's most creative
local artists, this monthly Uptown market is juried for quality and always features
local food, music and kids' activities. Perfect on warm-weather days.
The Tremé
The oldest African American neighborhood in the city is obviously steeped in a lot of
history. Leafy Esplanade Avenue , which borders the neighborhood, is full of old-school
Creole mansions, and is one of the prettiest streets in the city.
Louis Armstrong Park PARK

(701 N Rampart St; 9am-10pm) Louis Armstrong Park encompasses Congo Square , an
American cultural landmark. Now a lovely landscaped park, it was the one place where
enslaved people were allowed to congregate and play the music they had carried over the
seas - a practice outlawed in most other slave-holding societies. The preservation of this
musical heritage helped lay the groundwork for rhythms that would eventually become
jazz.
