minutes). MARC trains ( mta.maryland.gov run three times daily Monday to Friday.
Berkeley Springs
America's first spa town (George Washington relaxed here) is an odd jumble of spiritual-
ism, artistic expression and pampering spa centers. Farmers in pickups, sporting Confed-
erate flags, and acupuncturists in tie-dye smocks regard each other with bemusement on
the roads of Bath (still the official name).
The Berkeley Springs State Park's Roman Baths ( 304-258-2711;
www.berkeleyspringssp.com/spa.html ; 2 S Washington St; bath $22; 10am-6pm) are uninspir-
ing soaks in dimly lit individual tile-lined rooms, but it's the cheapest spa deal in town.
(Fill your water bottle with some of the magic stuff at the fountain outside the door.) For
a more indulgent experience, book a treatment (massage, facial, aromatherapy) across the
green at the Bath House (
800-431-4698; www.bathhouse.com ; 21 Fairfax St; 1hr massage
$75; 10am-5pm) .
Cacapon State Park ( 304-258-1022; 818 Cacapon Lodge Dr; lodge/cabins from $85/91)
has simple lodge accommodations plus modern and rustic cabins (with fireplaces) in a
peaceful wooded setting, 9 miles south of Berkeley Springs (off US 522). There's hiking,
lake swimming and a golf course.
