ular with students on a budget and professors looking for a bargain night out.
South Street Brewery SOUTHERN$$$
(106 W South St; mains $9-18; from 5pm Mon-Sat) In a restored 1800s brick warehouse,
you'll find tasty craft brews, good Southern bistro fare (barbecue pulled pork, crawfish-
and-mushroom-stuffed trout) and occasional live bands (currently Wednesday nights
from 10pm). It's a short stroll from the Downtown Mall.

ish restaurant-bar serves nicely turned out Latin-inspired dishes (spicy tuna tartar, chili-
dusted sea scallops and achiote-rubbed grilled pork). There's an outdoor patio for warm
nights and a crackling fireplace in winter.

hours).
Charlottesville Albemarle Airport (CHO;

north of downtown; offers regional flights.
Greyhound/Trailways Terminal ( 434-295-5131; 310 W Main St) Runs three daily buses
to both Richmond ($20, 1ΒΌ hours) and Washington, DC ($26, three hours).
Trolley (
6:40am-11:30pm Mon-Sat, 8am-5pm Sun) A free trolley connects W Main St
with UVA.
Appomattox Court House & Around
At the McLean House in the town of Appomattox Court House, General Robert E Lee
surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S Grant, in effect ending
the Civil War. Instead of coming straight here, follow Lee's retreat ( 800-673-8732;
www.varetreat.com ) on a winding 25-stop tour that starts in Petersburg at Southside Rail-
road Station (River St and Cockade Alley) and cuts through some of the most attractive
countryside in Virginia. Best take a detailed road map, as the trail is not always clearly
