South Street Inn B&B$$$
$$$
( 434-979-0200; www.southstreetinn.com ; 200 South St; r incl breakfast $150-255; ) In
the heart of downtown Charlottesville, this elegant 1856 building went through previous
incarnations as a girl's finishing school, boarding house and brothel. Now it houses
heritage-style rooms - a total of two dozen, which gives this place more depth and di-
versity than your average B&B.
Eating
The Downtown Mall, a pedestrian zone lined with dozens of shops and restaurants, is
great for people-watching and outdoor dining on warm days. At night the bars along
University Ave attract students and 20-somethings.
Whiskey Jar SOUTHERN$
( 434-202-1549; 227 West Main St; mains $9-16; ) The Whiskey Jar does neo-Southern
comfort food in an affected rustic setting of wooden furniture where wait staff wear plaid
and drinks are served out of Mason jars. We're tempted to say it's all a little too cute, but
honestly, the Jar nails it - simple, fresh food, such as mustard-braised rabbit, is delicious
and exceedingly good value.
Local MODERN AMERICAN$$$
( 434-984-9749; 824 Hinton Ave; mains $11-25; 5:30-10pm Sun-Thu, to 11pm Fri & Sat) The
Local has earned many fans for its locavore-loving menu (try black truffle mac 'n'
cheese or roast duck with blood orange gastrique) and the elegant, warmly lit interior
(exposed brick adorned with colorful oil paintings). There's sidewalk and rooftop dining
in warmer months, plus great cocktails.
Blue Moon Diner AMERICAN$$$
(512 W Main St; mains $10-20; 8am-10pm Mon-Fri, from 9am Sat, 9am-3pm Sun) One of Char-
lottesville's best breakfast and weekend brunch spots is a festive retro-style diner that
serves up delicious fare using locally sourced ingredients. You'll also find Virginia beers
on tap, old-school rock on the radio and the occasional live band.
