Sleeping & Eating
Topside Inn B&B$$$
( 207-633-5404; www.topsideinn.com ; 60 McKown St; r incl breakfast $165-275; ) Atop
McKown Hill, this grand gray mansion has Boothbay's best harbor views. Rooms are el-
egantly turned out in crisp nautical prints and beachy shades of sage, sea glass and khaki.
Main-house rooms have more historic charm, but rooms in the two adjacent modern
guesthouses are sunny and lovely, too. Enjoy the sunset from an Adirondack chair on the
inn's sloping manicured lawn.
Lobster Dock SEAFOOD$$$
( www.thelobsterdock.com ; 49 Atlantic Ave; mains $10-26; 11:30am-8:30pm) Of all the many
lobster joints in Boothbay Harbor, this sprawling wooden waterfront shack is one of the
best and cheapest. It serves traditional fried seafood platters, sandwiches and steamers,
but whole, butter-dripping lobster is definitely the main event.
Monhegan Island
This small granite island with high cliffs and crashing surf, 9 miles off the Maine coast,
attracts summer day-trippers, artists and nature-lovers who find inspiration in the dramat-
ic views and agreeable isolation. Tidy and manageable, Monhegan is just 1.5 miles long
and a half-mile wide. The online Monhegan Island Visitor's Guide
( www.monheganwelcome.com ) has information and accommodation links. Rooms typically
book out in summer, so plan ahead if you're not just visiting on a day trip.
In addition to its 17 miles of walking trails, there's an 1824 lighthouse with a small
museum in the former keeper's house and several artists studios that you can poke your
head into.
Departing from Port Clyde, the Monhegan Boat Line ( 207-372-8848;
www.monheganboat.com ; round-trip adult/child $32/18) runs three trips daily to Monhegan
from late May to mid-October, once a day for the rest of the year. The MV Hardy III (
800-278-3346; www.hardyboat.com ; round-trip adult/child $32/18; mid-Jun-Sep) departs for
Monhegan twice daily from New Harbor, on the east side of the Pemaquid Peninsula.
Both boats take approximately one hour and both have early-morning departures and
late-afternoon returns, perfect for day-tripping.
