OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
PEMAQUID PENINSULA
Adorning the southernmost tip of the Pemaquid Peninsula, Pemaquid Point is one
of the most wildly beautiful places in Maine, with its tortured igneous rock forma-
tions pounded by treacherous seas. Perched atop the rocks in the 7-acre Light-
house Park ( 207-677-2494; www.bristolparks.org ; Pemaquid Point; adult/child $2/free;
sunrise-sunset) is the 11,000-candle-power Pemaquid Light, built in 1827, and a star of
the 61 surviving lighthouses along the Maine coast. A climb to the top will reward
you with a fine coastal view. You may well be carrying an image of Pemaquid Light
in your pocket without knowing it - it's the beauty featured on the back of the
Maine state quarter. The keeper's house now serves as the Fishermen's Museum (
9am-5:15pm mid-May-mid-Oct) displaying period photos, old fishing gear and light-
house paraphernalia. Admission is included in the park fee. Pemaquid Peninsula is
15 miles south of US 1 via ME 130.
Camden & Around
With rolling hills as a backdrop and a harbor full of sailboats, Camden is a gem. Home to
Maine's justly famed fleet of windjammers, it attracts nautical-minded souls. You can get
a superb view of pretty Camden and its surroundings by taking the 45-minute climb up
Mt Battie in Camden Hills State Park ( 207-236-3109; 280 Belfast Rd/US 1; adult/child
$4.50/1; 7am-sunset) at the north side of Camden.
Lobster fanatics (and who isn't!) won't want to miss the Maine Lobster Festival
( www.mainelobsterfestival.com ; early Aug) , New England's ultimate homage to the crusty
crustacean, held in nearby Rockland.
The Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce (
207-236-4404;
www.camdenme.org ; 2 Public Landing;
9am-5pm) , near the harbor, provides visitor inform-
ation on the region.
Two miles south of Camden, the sleepy harborside town of Rockport is a much smal-
ler and more peaceful settlement that's known for the world-renowned Maine Media
Workshops ( www.mainemedia.edu ; 70 Camden St, Rockport) .
