In-Depth Information
Portland Harbor Hotel HOTEL$$$
$$$
( 207-775-9090; www.portlandharborhotel.com ; 468 Fore St; r from $269; ) This inde-
pendent hotel has a classically coiffed lobby, where guests relax on upholstered leather
chairs surrounding the glowing fireplace. The rooms carry on the classicism, with sunny
gold walls and pert blue toile bedspreads. The windows face Casco Bay, the interior
garden or the street; garden rooms are quieter. Parking is $16.
WHOOPIE!
Looking like steroid-pumped Oreos, these marshmallow-cream-filled chocolate
snack cakes are a staple of bakeries and seafood-shack dessert menus across the
state. Popular both in Maine and in Pennsylvania's Amish country, whoopie pies
are said to be so named because Amish farmers would shout 'whoopie!' when they
discovered one in their lunch pail. Don't leave the state without trying at least one.
For our money, Portland's Two Fat Cats Bakery ( Click here ) has the best.
