Sleeping
Portland has a healthy selection of midrange and upscale B&Bs, though very little at the
budget end. The most idyllic accommodations are in the old town houses and grand
Victorians in the West End.
Inn at St John INN$
( 207-773-6481; www.innatstjohn.com ; 939 Congress St; r incl breakfast $79-169; ) This
turn-of-the-century hotel has a stuck-in-time feel, from the old-fashioned pigeonhole
mailboxes behind the lobby desk to the narrow, sweetly floral rooms. Ask for a room
away from noisy Congress St.
Morrill Mansion B&B$$$
( 207-774-6900; www.morrillmansion.com ; 249 Vaughan St; r incl breakfast $149-239; )
Charles Morrill, the original owner of this 19th-century West End town house, made his
fortune by founding B&M baked beans, still a staple of Maine pantries. His home has
been transformed into a handsome B&B, with seven guest rooms furnished in a trim,
classic style. Think hardwood floors, lots of tasteful khaki and taupe shades. Some rooms
are a bit cramped; if you need lots of space, try the two-room Morrill Suite.
La Quinta Inn HOTEL$$$
( 207-871-0611; www.laquinta.com ; 340 Park St; r incl breakfast $75-149; ) Best
value among the chains, La Quinta has well-maintained rooms and a convenient location
opposite the ballpark of the Portland Sea Dogs, a Boston Red Sox-affiliate team.
