Pittsfield
Just west of the town of Pittsfield is Hancock Shaker Village ( 413-443-0188;

fascinating museum illustrating the lives of the Shakers, the religious sect that founded
the village in 1783. The Shakers believed in communal ownership, the sanctity of work
and celibacy, the latter of which proved to be their demise. Their handiwork - graceful in
its simplicity - includes wooden furnishings and 20 buildings, the most famous of which
is the round stone barn.
Williamstown & North Adams
Cradled by the Berkshire's rolling hills, Williamstown is a picture-perfect New England
college town revolving around the leafy campus of Williams College. Williamstown and
neighboring North Adams boast three outstanding art museums, each a worthy destina-
tion in itself.

For the finest fall foliage drive in Massachusetts, head west on MA 2 from Green-
field to Williamstown on the 63-mile route known as the Mohawk Trail . The lively
Deerfield River slides alongside, with roaring, bucking stretches of whitewater that
turn leaf-peeping into an adrenaline sport for kayakers.
