In-Depth Information
MV Bakery BAKERY$
( www.mvbakery.com ; 5 Post Office Sq; baked goods $1-3; 7am-5pm) Inexpensive coffee,
apple fritters and cannoli are served all day, but the best time to swing by is from 9pm to
midnight, when folks line up at the back door to buy hot doughnuts straight from the
baker.
Slice of Life CAFE$$$
( www.sliceoflifemv.com ; 50 Circuit Ave; mains $8-24; 8am-9pm; ) The look is casual; the
fare is gourmet. At breakfast, there's kick-ass coffee, portobello omelets and fab potato
pancakes. At dinner the roasted cod with sun-dried tomatoes is a savory favorite. And the
desserts - decadent crème brûlée and luscious lemon tarts - are as good as you'll find
anywhere.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
IF YOU HAVE A FEW MORE DAYS
Known as Up-Island , the rural western half of Martha's Vineyard is a patchwork of
rolling hills, small farms and open fields frequented by wild turkeys and deer. Feast
your eyes and your belly at the picturesque fishing village of Menemsha , where
you'll find seafood shacks with food so fresh the boats unload their catch at the
back door. They'll shuck you an oyster and steam you a lobster while you watch
and you can eat alfresco on a harborside bench.
The coastal Aquinnah Cliffs , also known as the Gay Head Cliffs, are so special
they're a National Natural Landmark. These 150ft-high cliffs glow with an amazing
array of colors that can be best appreciated in the late-afternoon light. You can
hang out at Aquinnah Public Beach (parking $15) , just below the multihued cliffs, or
walk a mile north along the shore to an area that's popular with nude sunbathers.
Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary ( www.sheriffsmeadow.org ; Indian Hill Rd; 8:30am-5:30pm)
, off State Rd, has an inviting 2.5-mile hike across native bogs and forest to a
coastal bluff with views of Cape Cod. The Massachusetts Audubon Society's Felix
Neck Wildlife Sanctuary ( www.massaudubon.org ; Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Rd; adult/child $4/3;
dawn-dusk;
) is a birder's paradise with 4 miles of trails skirting marshes and
ponds.
