BORDER CROSSING: CANADIAN NIAGARA FALLS
When people say they are visiting the falls they usually mean the Canadian side,
which is naturally blessed with superior views. Canada's Horseshoe Falls are
wider and especially photogenic from Queen Victoria Park; at night they're illumin-
ated with a colored light show. The Journey Behind the Falls ( 905-354-1551; 6650
Niagara Pkwy; adult/child Apr-Dec $15.95/10.95, Dec-Apr $11.25/6.95; 9am-6pm, opens later in
summer) gives access to a spray-soaked viewing area beneath the falls. Niagara on
the Lake , 15km to the north, is a small town full of elegant B&Bs and a famous
summertime theater festival.
Virtually every major hotel chain has at least several locations on the Canadian
side of the falls. Obvious tourist-trap restaurants are a dime a dozen in and around
Clifton Hill. American fare and chains dominate the culinary scene. The Lundy's
Lane area has tons of cheap eats.
NEW JERSEY
There are McMansions, à la the Real Housewives of New Jersey , guys who speak with
thick Jersey accents like characters from a TV crime drama, and guidos and guidettes
who spend their days GTL'ing (gym, tan and laundry) on the Shore. However, the state is
at least as well defined by high-tech and banking headquarters and sophisticated, pro-
gressive people living in charming towns. Get off the exits, flee the malls and you are
privy to a beautiful side of the state: a quarter is farmland and it has 127 miles of beauti-
ful beaches and charming and fun beachside towns, as well as two of New York City's
greatest icons: the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
