WASHINGTON ISLAND & ROCK ISLAND
From Door County's tip near Gills Rock, daily ferries ( 920-847-2546; www.wisferry.com ;
Northport Pier) go every half hour to Washington Island (round-trip adult/child/bike/
car $13/7/4/26), which has 700 Scandinavian descendants, a couple of mu-
seums, beaches, bike rentals and carefree roads for cycling. Accommodations and
camping are available. More remote is lovely Rock Island , a state park with no cars
or bikes at all. It's a wonderful place for hiking, swimming and camping. Get there
via the Karfi ferry ( www.wisferry.com ) , which departs Jackson Harbor on Washington Is-
land (round-trip adult/child $11/5).
