Larger-than-life sculptor's model 'Big Alma' de Bretteville Spreckels donated her fortune
to build this tribute to Californians killed in France in WWI. Featured artworks range from
Monet water lilies to John Cage soundscapes, Iraqi ivories to R Crumb comics - part of the
Legion's Achenbach collection of 90,000 modern graphic artworks. (

Golden Gate Park ends in this blustery beach, too chilly for bikini-clad clambakes but ideal
for wetsuited pro surfers braving riptides (casual swimmers beware). Bonfires are permit-
ted in artist-designed fire-pits only; no alcohol allowed. At the beach's south end, beach-
combers may spot sand-dollars and a 19th-century shipwreck. Stick to paths in fragile
dunes, where skittish snowy plover shorebirds shelter. (
