The United States' oldest ballet company remains exceedingly sprightly, performing more
than 100 shows annually, from the classic Nutcracker (the US premiere was here) to mod-
ern Mark Morris. The company performs mostly at the War Memorial Opera House Janu-
ary to May, with occasional shows at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts ( Click here ) ;

This opulent former bordello on a sketchy block is full of surprises: rockers Black Rebel
Motorcycle Club playing acoustic, Nick Lowe jamming with Ry Cooder, and even burly
bouncers gently swaying to Vetiver. Arrive early to claim front-row balcony seats with a
pint and a passable burger, or find standing room downstairs by the stage. (

Big acts with an international following play this old vaudeville theater, with balcony-
shakers ranging from Iggy and the Stooges to Feist and Wilco, and the occasional comedy
act like hometown favorite Margaret Cho, but lines wrap around the block for shows by
Furthur (formerly the Grateful Dead). Hit the bar early for whiskey, beer and sustainable
sausages at fair prices. (
