SF Symphony has won more Grammys than Lady Gaga, and you can see why: conductor
Michael Tilson Thomas keeps audiences rapt through Beethoven, Mahler, and collabora-
tions with stars such as Joshua Bell, Pink Martini and (believe it) Metallica. Don't miss
pre-show talks, where 'MTT' explains what makes each piece exciting. Call the rush-ticket
hotline ( 415-503-5577) after 6:30pm for $20 next-day tickets. (

Since the Gold Rush, SF has been obsessed with opera - and today, SF Opera rivals the NY
Met with original operas such as Stephen King's Dolores Claiborne and modern revivals
including Puccini's Girl of the Golden West under acclaimed Tuscan director Nicola
Luisotti. Book ahead, or score $10 same-day standing-room tickets at 10am, and two hours
before curtain. (

Jazz greats coast-to-coast and from Argentina to Yemen are showcased at America's new-
est, largest dedicated jazz center. The SF Jazz Festival takes place here in July, but year-
round the calendar features legends such as McCoy Tyner, Regina Carter, Béla Fleck and
Tony Bennett (who left his heart here, after all). Upper-tier cheap seats are more like stools,
but offer clear stage views. (
