In-Depth Information
Slip out of the Financial District and into something more comfortable at this boudoir-
styled bistro, where co-workers flirt shamelessly over craft cocktails and friends dish over
shareable plates of Andalucia-inspired Californian Petrale sole with chorizo sausage, and
pancetta-wrapped rabbit loin with braised escargot. (

Rincon Annex Post Office
Only in San Francisco could a post office be controversial. Art-deco Rincon Annex (
OFFLINE MAP , H3; 101 Spear St; admission free; Embarcadero, Embarcadero) is lined with Works
Project Administration murals of San Francisco history. Russian-born painter Anton Refregier began in 1941,
only to be interrupted by WWII and political squabbles over differing versions of history. After 92 changes, his
mural cycle was completed in 1948 with War and Peace , pointedly contrasting Nazi book-burning and postwar
promises for 'Freedom from fear/want/of worship/speech.' Initially denounced as communist by McCarthyists,
Refregier's masterpiece is now a National Landmark.

Last time you enjoyed casual Mexican dining this much, there were probably ocean
breezes and hammocks involved. Instead, you're steps away from SoMa's museums, sa-
voring al pastor (marinated pork) burritos with mesquite salsa and grilled pineapple, and
sipping margaritas with chili-salted rims. Prices approximate what you'd pay in the Mis-
sion, give or take a buck and a BART ride. (
