challenge of a complete restoration. They later wrote me a letter about it, and told
me what a satisfying accomplishment the adventure was.

The abandoned Page Meadows house
near Free Union, Virginia, dates to
1770 but was hidden inside an 1859
farmhouse. The log house had been
engulfed over the years with timber
frame additions, clapboarded on the
exterior and plastered over on the
interior. In fact, the most recent inhabi-
tants never realized they were actually
living in a log house.
