In-Depth Information
Voltaire (top left), Rousseau (top- right), Victor Hugo and Marie Curie were some of the
famous French intellectuals buried in the crypt
Let's have a closer look at those four out of 70 extraordinary persons in French history to
better understand their importance to the French Nation.
Voltaire (1694-1778), was a writer, historian, and philosopher who was famous for his
attacks on the established Catholic Church (which at this time was a very risky thing to
do). He was an advocate for freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of
church and state. Believe it or not, but he wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than
2,000 books and pamphlets.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), was one of the most famous philosophers, writers,
and composers of the 18th century. His political philosophy not only influenced the French
Revolution but also the overall development of modern political, sociological, and educa-
tional thought. He also wrote seven operas as well as music in other forms and was interred
as a national hero in the Panthéon in 1794.
Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a French novelist, poet and dramatist of the Romantic
movement and still considered as one of the greatest and best known French writers. You
might know the novels “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” or ”Les Misérables” that were
written by Victor Hugo. Victor Hugo earned widespread respect as a campaigner for social
causes such as the abolition of the death penalty.
Marie Curie (1802-1885) was a physicist and chemist of Polish origin but a naturalised
Frenchwoman who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first wo-
man to receive a Nobel Price and later was awarded a second one in a different field. Her
achievements included scientific development in the field of radioactivity, the discovery of
two new chemical elements, polonium and radium and many other breakthroughs in scien-
ce.
