La Convention Nationale from a different angle
This magnificent statue shows Marianne, the symbol of France, surrounded by soldiers and
members of the parliament just after the revolution. The inscribed phrase: “Vivre libre ou
mourir” (live free or die) is engraved below her.
Marianne is nowadays present everywhere in France and holds a place of honor in town
halls and law courts. She symbolizes the "Triumph of the Republic", is engraved on French
euro coins and appears on French postage stamps and banknotes. She is considered as the
most prominent depiction of the French Republic.
