Marianne, the figure of Liberty, holding the flag of the French Revolution (Eugène

The painting above is called “La Liberté guidant le peuple” (Liberty Leading the People),
commemorating the July Revolution of 1830, which toppled King Charles X of France.
The painting shows Marianne, representing Liberty, holding the red, white, and blue tricol-
or flag of the French revolution while leading the people forward over the bodies of the
fallen.
The tricolor flag is still France's flag today. Marianne became a significant republican sym-
bol, as opposed to monarchy, and an icon of freedom and democracy against all forms of
dictatorship.
