Kilmainham Gaol. Photo by psyberartist
Set foot in a place rich in history with a visit to Dublin's famous historical site. A political
prison, this place stood as a silent witness to countless persecutions and execution of many
Irish heroes of the past which include the seven signatories of the proclamation of the Irish
Independent Republic. This is also one of the largest unoccupied gaols or jails in Europe,
covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland's emergence as a modern na-
tion from 1780s to the 1920s.
Attractions include a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the prison
and its restoration. The tour of the prison includes an audio-visual show. Tours may be ar-
ranged for visitors with special needs by prior arrangement. It is advisable to book in ad-
vance as there is a large number of daily visitors.
