Phoenix Park
Located right at the heart of the city is the Phoenix Park. One of Europe's largest city parks,
which covers 1,752 acres or 707 hectares of land space, this is one of the city's best-loved
free amenities. It is a 350-year old place of leisure which started as a royal deer park for
King Charles II in 1662. Archaeologists have discovered that a Neolithic community lived
on a high strip at the Southern edge of this park circa 5,500 years ago.
This is where you can find Dublin Zoo, the home of many rare and exotic animals living
and roaming in a wide variety of natural habitats. Around one-third of the park is covered
with deciduous trees like oak, ash, lime, beech, sycamore and horse chestnut. It has 50 per
cent of the mammal species and 40 per cent of the bird species in Ireland, making it one of
the most biodiverse locations in the country.
