Christ Church Cathedral. Photo by William Murphy
One of the key places to see in Dublin is the Christ Church Cathedral. This church, also
known as The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, sits in the oldest part of the city, dating back
to 1038 AD. The wooden structure was first built by Sitric, the then Danish king of Dublin
and in 1171 it was extended into a cruciform and rebuilt into stone by Strongbow. In 1878
huge restoration was done where only the transepts, the crypt and a few other portions were
preserved. The interiors of this church has magnificent stoneworks and graceful pointed
arches, with delicately chiselled columns. This beautiful edifice has stained glass windows
and smaller chapels behind the main altar. This is always a must-see for visitors to Dublin.
