Figure 8.82 Refined over an octant of a spherical surface.
Figure 8.83 Refined over an interior spherical surface.
The centre of the spherical surface whose radius is of 2 units is positioned at the centroid of
the cube. The size of the elements on the surface is to be refined to 0.05 unit, which increases
linearly away from the surface to a maximum value of 5 units at the corners of the cube,
a change of 100 times in linear scale or 10 6 in volume. A cross section of the final mesh
consisting of 67,326 node points and 364,778 elements is shown in Figure 8.83. The mean
γ-quality of the mesh is 0.771 indicating a very high quality of the refined mesh in spite of
the complicated pattern of the density distribution and a rapid change in element size.
A more realistic physical object made up of 24 elements for adaptive refinement analysis is
taken as example 4, as shown in Figure 8.84. The lengths of the external edge and the inter-
nal edges are 10 and 4 units, respectively, whereas the height of the object is 5 units. Small
elements of size 0.05 unit are to be generated at the internal sharp corners, and elements
