Yuyuan Gardens & Bazaar
With their shaded alcoves, pavilions, glittering pools
churning with carp, and pines sprouting wistfully from
rockeries, the Yuyuan Gardens are one of Shanghai's
premier sights - but they can be overpoweringly crowded
at weekends. The surrounding streets and Buddhist and
Taoist temples are among the few places in the city that re-
tain a flavour of yesteryear, so if you're in need of an anti-
dote to Shanghai's continuous quest for modernity, this is
the place to come.
